Freestyle Wrestling World Championship came to an end on Sunday morning with the Russian as the champion and Iran as vice-champion, which does not seem to be a desirable ranking for the country. The federation officials might put the blame on the team who were young and inexperienced but there is doubt if this can be a good reason.
On the first day of the competitions, Seyed Ahmad Mohammadi won the bronze medal in 65 kg weight by defeating Toghrul Asharov while he truly deserved to win the gold medal. Alireza Karimi grabbed a bronze medal on the second day of the competitions while Behnam Ehsanpoor and Abbas Tahan could not win medals. On the third day and the last day of the competitions, Iran’s representatives in the second 4 weights appeared against their rivals two of whom could reach the final.
One of the most experienced Iranian wrestlers, Hassan Rahimi in 57 kg could defeat all his opponents from Venezuela, Belarus, the USA, and North Korea, and Russia to reach the final where he was defeated by the Georgian wrestler Vladimer Khinchegashvili and received the bronze medal.
Iran’s other finalist, Hassan Yazdani in 70 kg had also beaten his rivals from South Korea, Bulgaria, and Georgia, and the US; however, he lost the final match against the Russian wrestler Magomedrasul Muhtarovitch Gazimagomedov to win the bronze medal.
Two other Iranian freestylers, Alireza Ghasemi in 74kg and Parviz Hadi in 125kg, failed to win any medals while Ghasemi could receive the ticket to the Olympic Games.
Accordingly, Iran could get 5 tickets to the Olympic games for 57, 65, 75, 86, and 97kg weights but lost its chance in 125kg weight.
In 2014 UWW World Wrestling Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Iran’s national freestyle wrestling team had also ranked second in the world failing to crown the world championships.
